When Islam religion came to women it somewhat changed their status. It made it a little more important. Since first of all Muhamad had a wife he depended on so much. And plus the Qoran also explains how women are equal but spiritually but equal is equal right?

Unlike other religions, Islam offered numerous rights to women: divorce, property inheritance, and marriage contract.

In fact, Muhammad wife was a widow.

Women were ubornidnated to man by the name of ISLAM. They also had to veil, cover all part of their body. They should not talk with any other MEN who were not part of their family or relatives. Not even looking other men wasn't allowed to women. However, since Muhammad's wife was a widow, the religion took care of widows.

Like everyone has mentioned... all of the following religions women were subordinate to men. I agree with kristeena that they were in different degrees. Like in Islam, there was the veiling of women. It was more patriarchal but also more respected. While in Jainism all men and women were equal under the eyes of god.

At the beginning the Quran was used to give more rights to women, but after Muhammad's death, men started to use the Quran and sharia to put male dominance. Women's social and sexual lives were controlled by men. Also because Muhammad had more than a wife, men started to misinterpret it (changed meaning) and said that men could have up to 4 wives. They also started the veiling of women.

Before Islam, women had no property or inheritance, female infanticide was practiced as well as polygamy. After Muhumad came in women in theory became spiritually equal. Although they were not really equal, conditions were made relativly better. Female infanticide was forbidden, women could maintain possession of their dowry, and widows became more considered. Later, after Muhumads death, came veiling.
