1914-Present Q2: Analyze the impact of World War I on African and Arab nations (CCOT)

Think about the baseline characteristics of each, the process of change and the continuities and changes that emerge.
What does WWI impact these societies? What ideas or topics elicit the attention of these nations? How successful are they in achieving their goals?

The impact of World War 1 in Africa was that many battles were held in Africa, so its territory got destroyed. Besides that, many Africans were recruited (forced) as soldiers so they had to kill their own people even though the war was neither about them nor their benefit.

Good answer Jina, also think about the ideas spread during WWI, particularly those put forth by Wilson. What expectations do the African and Arab nations have and what happens in reality?

because of the destruction of wwI in africa and india, it promoted the idea of nationalism making colonies want to gain independence.

As Kristeena explained, the pan-African movement emerged after the Great War when Wilson addressed his 14 points.

Also, Africa and the Arab nations were seriously damaged economically from a war that they shouldn't have been involved.

The African countries were conquered and being ruled by the European powers. Therefore when the War came to Africa the people were being recruited into the army to fight each other. They would kill their friends. Since the countries they were being ruled by where enemies. The Arabs were beign ruled by the Ottomans. When they wanted their independence they decided to help the European powers to fight off the Ottomans and defeat the Central Powers. Once they had defeated the Ottomans they got their independence. Hoiwever the arabs never got what they were promised do to the treaties the European powers kept on having.

As Jina and others explained, WWI caused Africans to be drawn into the war. They were drafted as troops for combat and also because of Allies targeting German colonies in Africa it caused there to be damage.

As the others have explained, WWI caused africans to be forced into war. Many were killed and their land destoyed. Also, Wilson's 14 points and the Pan-african movement were results of the war. As far as arabs go, they joined European forces to try and defeat the Ottoman empire so they could gain their independence. The ottoman Empire was defeated and the arabs got their independence, but it was not what they expected and were promised.

WWI indeed posed great obstacles in both countries' development. Tensions grew and economies were reliant on foreign countries. Traditions were stripped, and, at this time, bunches of really cool (and sometimes not so cool) patriotic leaders emerged. Africans that were educated outside came in looking for change, and was it here or in WWII that the new elite class was formed in Africa???
