The sub-saharan africans changed their religion to Muslim so they would have easier trading with European powers. The Muslim religion played a major role because they used the religion as a major of understanding between the regions.
Of course this religion, Islam, spread by the trade between Muslims and Sub-Saharans and Europeans. Because Europeans were Christianity or Protestants, only few people adopted the religion. Also the Muslims conquered some lands in Europe such as Spain, and succeeded convert them into Muslims. But it was not successful in Europe to convert them. However, Sub-Saharan Africa was easier then Europe to convert them into Islam since they were easy to conquer and also they adopted well the new stuffs from Muslim Worlds. It was similar that Europeans and Sub-Saharans adopted the technology, literature, and other sruffs those were created in Islamic World and they used for long time, even until now.
in sub sahara they adopted muslim religion in order to facilitate trade and communication with the islamic world while in europe most europeans had more difficulty trading since they were mostly christians
While there were relativly few followers of Islam in Europe, Sub-Sahara adopted Islam beliefs much more than Europeans. It was still not an exclusive faith though. Like others have said, they adopted it to encourage trade with the Islamic world. Those that lived in the city and towns tended to convert to Islam more than those of the countryside.
